John Cena has spent the past four years working closely with James Gunn. The pair have teamed up on The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker and now Superman.
That partnership has given John Cena the chance to reinvent himself as a leading man while James Gunn oversees one of Hollywood’s biggest superhero franchises. Their most successful collaboration so far, Peacemaker, returns for a second season on August 21.
The show has been hailed as the highest-rated project of Cena’s career. Critics praised his performance, with NME calling the series “irreverent” and others highlighting the surprising depth he brought to a character often written off as a joke.
Away from acting, Cena is also navigating the end of his WWE career. He announced last year that he would retire in 2025. Since then, he has turned heel for the first time in two decades, won a record 17th world championship, and faced rivals ranging from Cody Rhodes to Randy Orton and CM Punk.
With all of that going on, Cena still can’t escape the meme that has followed him for nearly two decades. Fans continue to flood social media with ‘You Can’t See Me’ jokes, keeping the invisible man gag alive in every corner of pop culture.
Now we know how Gunn really feels about it. Speaking to GQ, Cena admitted the director has no patience for the bit. “I know James and he f***ing hates that joke,” Cena said.
“I don’t mind it, so in my mind, just to p*ss him off, yes. That’s absolutely what James Gunn meant. He meant, ‘You can’t see me.’ He is throwing s**t at his computer right now.”
The comment shows the contrast between the two. Gunn wants to distance himself from the meme, while Cena is happy to lean in. His willingness to laugh at it has only made the joke spread further.
