WATCH: DWAYNE JOHNSON HONORS SAMOAN HERITAGE IN SPECIAL MOMENT WITH MOM

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson dancing with his mom lit up Instagram after the pair performed a Samoan Taualuga in Hawaii.

Johnson posted a clip from a family gathering, with relatives and friends cheering from the side. His daughters joined in, and the stage filled with smiling faces. Audience members tossed cash onto the floor, a custom that celebrates the dancer’s effort and honors the moment.

Johnson began the dance shirtless, which he said was part of tradition. “It’s custom for Samoan men to take their shirts off to proudly show our Polynesian tatau (tattoo) and the intricate stories our ink tells,” he wrote.

He then dropped low and slapped the ground in rhythm. He explained the movement in simple terms. “I’m slapping the ground as a way to show my respect for how significant this is and how sacred our ground becomes in this moment with our elders,” he said.

The Rock dancing with his mom struck a chord because Ata Johnson matched his energy step for step. She smiled throughout, encouraged her granddaughters, and moved with ease.

Johnson called the experience emotional and grounding. “Life is busy for everyone, so special moments like this mean the world to me, to honor our family, our culture and always so good coming back home to Hawaii,” he wrote.

This was not the first time they shared a stage. Ata joined her son at the Moana 2 premiere in 2024. They closed the night with another Taualuga.

Passing traditions to the next generation

The latest performance carried extra meaning. His young daughters, Jasmine and Tiana, were on stage. Johnson called it a blessing to share the moment with them. He said it matters that the next generation grows up connected to their Samoan heritage.

In replies to fans, Johnson said he hopes to take his family to Samoa. His daughters have not been yet, and he wants them to experience their grandmother’s homeland.

For viewers, the clip worked on two levels. It showed a star celebrating culture in a respectful setting. It also showed a family handing those traditions to the children who will carry them on.

Johnson left followers with a short line that summed up the feeling. “You can’t help but feel it. The mana.”
