Brock Lesnar shocked the wrestling world after making his WWE return at SummerSlam – his first appearance with the company since being named in the civil sexual lawsuit against former chairman Vince McMahon.
Head figures at the company have since avoided media scrutiny, and even cancelled the post-SummerSlam press conference on Sunday.
Chief content officer of the WWE, Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque appeared on ESPN to discuss the new PLE deal between the two parties, though the panel failed to properly question Lesnar’s controversial return.
Soft ball questions regarding Lesnar’s next move led to a generic answer from ‘The Game’ who said: “Have you met Brock? Whatever the hell he wants.
“When you’re Brock Lesnar, you sort of can — when that music hits and you walk down that aisle, doesn’t matter where he is, he sort of does what he wants to do.
“So we’re thrilled to have The Beast back. You know, we hit him up and said, ‘Time to come home.’
“And he was into it, and here we are. A massive, massive moment for our WWE fans, something that they thought they wouldn’t get to see. And making a statement with John Cena. You know, huge — and we’re thrilled to have him back.”
Paul Heyman hits back at critics
Lesnar’s former on-screen manager, Paul Heyman, became the first employee of the company to answer a direct question regarding the controversial nature of the return.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Heyman was pushed on the issue, with the WWE legend deciding to go after the critics.
He said: “Everything in life is met with criticism, I don’t pay attention to that.
“If you were in MetLife Stadium on Sunday, you would understand that return meant a lot to that audience. That audience was shocked to see Brock Lesnar come out and to see him F-5 John Cena.
“Nobody left MetLife Stadium going, ‘Oh God, they brought back Brock.’ People were just going nuts. That’s our paying audience. They’re happy to see him, I’m happy to be part of a team that presents him.
“There’s always going to be critics of anything that we do, and very few people ever make it to the top in life without either making mistakes or having skeletons in their closet.
“Obviously, the decision was made, it’s time to bring back Brock Lesnar. Whatever that decision is based on, I respect it. If there are critics of it, get over it.
“He’s here and he’s going to be here and you ain’t going to be able to cancel him. And I’m happy to have him back because the audience is happy to have him back. If we brought him back and the audience rebelled against it, I wouldn’t be happy to have him back.”
What is next for Brock Lesnar?
When Lesnar’s music hit after the main event of Night 2 at SummerSlam, the reaction from the capacity crowd at MetLife Stadium was immense.
Lesnar, whose last appearance was at SummerSlam in 2023, remains a very popular figure among wrestling circles and is likely to remain part of WWE’s plans until his legal position changes.
The former UFC heavyweight champion took out John Cena at the end of SummerSlam, meaning the company is lining up a storyline between the two men as we approach WWE’s next big event – Clash in Paris.
