NHL STAR MIKKO RANTANEN FACES HEFTY MILITARY PUNISHMENT IN FINLAND

Mikko Rantanen moved to the Dallas Stars hoping for a fresh chapter after a whirlwind year of trades and negotiations. Instead, the Finnish superstar is already facing a hefty distraction before his first full season in Texas.

Reports from Finland say Rantanen faces a fine up to $99,000 for failing to meet compulsory military service requirements.

The 28-year-old winger, a two-time 100-point scorer, missed the April 15, 2024 deadline to begin his service. His application to postpone came through a day late, and prosecutors argue that amounts to an unauthorized absence.

Finland requires all men to complete at least six months of service between the ages of 18 and 28. The system allows postponements for health or professional reasons, but applicants must file them on time. Rantanen’s delay, though just one day, has left him facing a penalty calculated from his income.

Mikko Rantanen faces hefty fine

Based on monthly earnings of about $394,000 after tax, the fine could range from $66,000 to nearly $99,000, plus a $45 evidence fee.

It is not the first time NHL stars from Finland or Switzerland have had to navigate these rules. Seattle Kraken forward Kaapo Kakko received an exemption due to diabetes, while Dallas teammate Roope Hintz was able to delay his service last season after injury.

Defenseman Olli Maatta completed his military training at 21, showing the different paths players take. For Rantanen, missing the paperwork deadline by hours has created an expensive problem.

The forward is coming off a season where teams traded him twice, first to Carolina and then to Dallas, before he helped his new team reach the Western Conference Finals.

After that chaos, he might have hoped for a quieter summer leading into his tenth NHL campaign. Instead, the fine means he starts the season with a legal bill from back home.

Thankfully for Dallas, the matter does not affect his eligibility to play. Mikko Rantanen can focus on hockey once he settles the fine, though the timing is less than ideal.

The Stars invested heavily in bringing him in as a centerpiece, and expectations remain sky high.

It remains unclear if this is a minor bump or tougher year ahead, but it’s far from the reset he wanted.
