DETROIT RED WINGS TO RETIRE NINTH JERSEY AS RUSSIAN ICON JOINS LEGENDS IN RAFTERS

Sergei Fedorov’s iconic #91 jersey will be retired by the Detroit Red Wings during the upcoming NHL season.

Fedorov played 13 seasons with the Red Wings from 1990-2003, grabbing 400 goals and 554 assists in 908 games with the franchise.

He won three Stanley Cup Championships and inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015 and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame a year later.

“I’m extremely grateful for this tremendous honor,” Fedorov said. “Thank you to everyone with the Red Wings organization, especially those who helped bring me to Detroit and gave me the chance to play for such a historic franchise.

“I was fortunate to be part of some unforgettable teams, and above all, I’m proud of the three Stanley Cup championships we won for our amazing fans in Hockeytown.”

“The memories made along the way – with legendary teammates, coaches, and exceptional ownership – will stay with me forever. … I can’t wait to see everyone in January.”

The #91 jersey will be hoisted to the rafters ahead of the Red Wings game with the Carolina Hurricanes at Little Caesars Arena in January 2026, during a pre-game jersey retirement ceremony.

Red Wings CEO Chris Ilitch said: “We are honored to celebrate Sergei Fedorov and raise his No. 91 to its rightful place hanging in the rafters at Little Caesars Arena, among the all-time greats who have worn the Winged Wheel.

“His exceptional skill, relentless drive, and lasting impact playing a pivotal role bringing three Stanley Cup championships to Detroit make him the perfect embodiment of the qualities deserving of our franchise’s most prestigious honor.”

Federov’s career has brought high praise from fellows icons of the sport.

“Sergei could do it all,” said Scotty Bowman, who was his coach for nine seasons at the Red Wings.

Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman called him “the most talented player I’ve ever seen.”, while Nicklas Lidstrom, who was also inducted to the 2015 Hall of Fame remarked that the Russian “could do things at a higher speed than anyone else.”

The Red Wings’ have now retired nine jerseys in their franchise history – Sid Abel (#12), Alex Delvecchio (#10), Gordie Howe (#9), Red Kelly (#4), Nicklas Lidstrom (#5), Ted Lindsay (#7), Terry Sawchuk (#1), current General Manager Steve Yzerman (#19) and now Sergei Fedorov ~91.

Detroit start the regular season on Thursday, October 9 against the Montreal Canadiens.
