The NFL is reviewing an incident involving DK Metcalf after the Pittsburgh Steelers receiver appeared to shove a Detroit Lions fan during Sunday’s game at Ford Field.
Metcalf stayed in the game. Officials did not eject him. That decision has since raised questions, especially after multiple video angles surfaced online.
What happened in Detroit
Television cameras caught Metcalf moving toward the front row during the first half of Pittsburgh’s 29–24 win over the Detroit Lions. A brief verbal exchange followed.
Metcalf then appeared to grab the fan’s shirt and thrust his arm upward in a motion that looked like a shove or swipe. He walked away moments later as nearby fans reacted.
The on-field officials did not throw a flag. Without a penalty on the play, Metcalf remained eligible to continue.

Why Metcalf wasn’t ejected
According to ESPN’s Dan Graziano, the league office can order an ejection even if officials miss an incident. That option did not apply here.
“I was stunned that Metcalf wasn’t ejected,” Graziano wrote. “Because no flag was thrown, the league is not allowed to weigh in on disqualification.”
That procedural gap explains why Metcalf stayed on the field. It also sparked debate about whether the rule leaves too much discretion in moments involving fans.
Graziano added that Mike Tomlin could have intervened himself.
“Steelers coach Mike Tomlin absolutely could and should have sat Metcalf down for the rest of the game once he found out what happened,” he wrote.
NFL reviewing incident
The NFL confirmed it will review the incident. League sources say precedent usually points toward a fine.
A stronger punishment remains possible. That depends on what additional video shows and how the league interprets the contact.
Unlike a Week 1 incident involving Lamar Jackson, available footage suggests the fan did not initiate physical contact with Metcalf.
Fan speaks out
The fan involved was later identified as Ryan Kennedy from Michigan. He spoke to local media after the game.
“What, my full name isn’t DeKaylin Zecharius Metcalf,” Kennedy said. “He doesn’t like his government name. I called him that and then he grabbed me and ripped my shirt.”
Kennedy added that he felt shaken afterward but stayed in his seat. Team officials spoke with him, and he was not removed from the stadium.
