UK TURNS UP HEAT ON BID TO HOST SUPER BOWL IN LONDON

The Super Bowl could be travelling across the pond within five years, as the UK looks to take the advantage in the race to host the biggest NFL match on the world stage.

The UK have been courting the prospect of holding the Super Bowl for a number of years, and now it appears to be inching closer with the British ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, backing a bid.

For over a decade, the NFL has been regularly travelling to London for international series matches in the regular season, and it’s no secret that British are very interested in owning their own home franchise.

Mandelson, who has been the UK ambassador in the USA since February, has visited president Donald Trump at the White House and is playing an important role in promoting Britain in the US.

His backing for a probable London Superbowl gives their bid a leg up over their rivals in the international series, Mexico City, Toronto, Munich and Tokyo.

‘I’ve made a big pitch for the first Super Bowl outside the US to take place in Britain,’ Mandelson told the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

‘I want that Super Bowl in Britain. I don’t care when it takes place but I want it announced while I’m ambassador. We love it, we love it.’

A London Super Bowl would have to wait until 2029 at the earliest with the San Francisco 49ers Levi’s Stadium hosting next year’s spectacle.

The Los Angeles Rams host the Superbowl in 2027, with Atlanta grabbing in the 2028 edition at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Super Bowl being played outside the USA would be a controversial move especially with several cities, including Nashville, Las Vegas and Minneapolis jostling for position to host the event in the 2030s.
