Police arrested Shaq Mason, a two-time Super Bowl champion offensive lineman, after a violent incident in Tennessee.
Police say the 31-year-old broke into the mother of his child’s Franklin home at around 3:00am on Wednesday.
According to court documents, Mason entered her bedroom, grabbed her by the neck, and choked her until she lost consciousness. He then punched her in the mouth and threatened to kill her.
Officers reported seeing a “fresh laceration” on her lip. They also noted that Mason later sent the woman a selfie with the message: “I’m gonna kill you.”
Police stopped Shaq Mason in his vehicle a short time later and arrested him during a traffic stop. Officers booked him on aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, harassment, and driving on a suspended license.
His bond is set at $150,000, and he remains in custody. A court hearing is scheduled for October.
The arrest represents a dramatic fall for a player once trusted to protect Tom Brady. Drafted in the fourth round by the New England Patriots in 2015, Mason quickly became a starter on the offensive line. He helped the team win two Super Bowls, lifting the Lombardi Trophy in 2017 and 2019.
He later joined Brady again with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2022 before a trade sent him to Houston. Mason started 32 games for the Texans across two seasons but the team released him in March. He is currently a free agent.
Spotrac records show Mason earned more than $63 million in salary across his NFL career. His peak season came in 2018, when the Patriots paid him nearly $13 million.
Georgia Tech recently honored Mason, despite his release, by naming him to its Sports Hall of Fame. In June, the school named him to its Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2025.
Mason also excelled locally at Columbia Central High School, winning a state title in 2010 and earning all-state honors. Instead of celebrating his Hall of Fame selection, he now prepares for a legal battle that could end his NFL career.
