Patrick Mahomes’ Dad has been back in the news after his February arrest for driving while intoxicated. The Kansas City Chiefs star has now spoken publicly about it for the first time.
Patrick Mahomes Sr., a former MLB pitcher, was arrested in Texas just days before the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LVIII win over the San Francisco 49ers. Court records show it was his third DWI arrest, making the charge a third-degree felony.
Mahomes said the incident was “not a distraction” but admitted it had been challenging on a personal level.
“It’s a family matter. I think that’s the biggest thing. I’m going to keep it that way and just make sure that I can keep my mind on football and keep moving forward.”
He continued: “It’s obviously a personal issue and that’s stuff that I’ll deal with internally and not in the public eye.”
Mahomes Sr., 54, played 11 seasons in Major League Baseball. He pitched for the Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Since his retirement, he has been a regular presence at his son’s games, often celebrating on the field after big wins.
The arrest happened on February 3 in Tyler, Texas. According to the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, Mahomes Sr. was booked into jail before posting bond. He is expected to appear in court later this year.
For Mahomes Jr., the timing added extra weight to an already high-pressure stretch. He was preparing for another Super Bowl appearance while also processing a serious family matter.
“That’s my dad, that’s my family, and so obviously it’s something I think about,” he said. “At the same time, I’ve got to be the best I can be for my teammates and keep my focus there.”
Patrick Mahomes has now returned his attention fully to the 2025 NFL season. The Chiefs will try to win a fourth Super Bowl in six years, with the quarterback again leading the charge
