The beef between Kwame Brown and Gilbert Arenas is nothing new, but it’s reached a new level following Arenas’ recent arrest.
Brown, a former No. 1 overall pick who’s become a no-filter YouTube personality, took aim at his old Wizards teammate after Arenas was charged with running a high-stakes illegal gambling operation out of his Encino mansion.
“I told y’all, this guy’s his own worst enemy,” Brown said in a video. “He’s gonna self-destruct, and here he goes again.”
Brown and Arenas played together for two years in Washington, where Brown’s confidence took a hit and Arenas was rising into stardom.
The two clashed off the court, and their relationship never recovered. Arenas has since joked that Brown lacked the work ethic to make it in the NBA.
Brown responded by accusing Arenas of sabotaging locker rooms and even claimed Arenas derailed Nick Young’s career.
This time, Brown didn’t hold back. He mocked Arenas for “sucking up” to LeBron James and Klutch Sports, accusing him of trying to stay relevant through association.
“You’re out here acting like Klutch Sports’ biggest cheerleader,” Brown quipped. “Ready to paint your face and carry their bags just to sip wine and play poker with LeBron.”
Gilbert Arenas fires back at Kwame Brown
Arenas was released on $50,000 bail and is facing three felony counts: conspiracy to run an illegal gambling business, operating said business, and lying to federal agents. If convicted, he could serve up to 15 years in prison.
But his first priority seemed to be clapping back at Kwame. In a video that quickly went viral, Arenas mocked Brown’s YouTube ban, rapped to Roxanne, and suggested Brown was under the influence.
“You got the white in your nose, man. Stay off the drugs,” Arenas said. “It’s too strong for you.”
He doubled down on his claims that Brown makes a living off targeting others.
“That boy gets all of his views off another person,” he said. “I got out of real jail before you got out of YouTube jail.”
While both men had turbulent NBA careers, they’ve leaned into their post-retirement personas.
Brown has rebranded as an online antagonist with a cult following. Arenas, meanwhile, had found a new lane as a podcast host.
Arenas’ podcast, Gil’s Arena, is on pause while he awaits trial.
Nick Young, another former Wizard, is reportedly stepping in to host. Brown mocked the shake-up, claiming Arenas had now ruined Young’s media career, too.
The Department of Justice alleges the poker games were tied to a transnational Israeli crime group.
One leaked photo even shows a table with “Arenas Poker Club” printed across the middle, undercutting his claims of ignorance.
Arenas insists he simply rented out the mansion and wasn’t involved in the games. His trial begins on September 23.
