NFL player Kris Boyd and his wife welcomed a newborn baby just days before the New York shooting, coach Aaron Glenn revealed.
Kris Boyd’s recovery continues in New York after the Jets cornerback was shot in the stomach on Sunday morning.
The incident took place outside the Sei Less restaurant in midtown Manhattan during an altercation that left Boyd seriously injured and rushed to the hospital.
Police said the shooting happened shortly after 2am. Boyd was with teammates Jamien Sherwood and Irvin Charles at the time. He was taken in critical condition, underwent multiple surgeries, and was later stabilised.
Earlier this week he posted an update from his hospital bed, writing, “God is real, God is powerful. I’m coming along, starting to breathe on my own now. Sincerely appreciate everyone.”
On Wednesday night, Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that Boyd and his wife had welcomed a baby shortly before the shooting.
Glenn reveals Boyd’s personal milestone
Speaking to reporters, Glenn said that news of the shooting immediately made him think about Boyd’s family.
“Once I heard about the situation, the first thing I thought about was he just had a kid,” Glenn said.
“I’m thinking about his wife. I’m thinking about his kid. I want to make sure that he’s okay. That’s the only thing that really went through my mind.”
Glenn said both mother and baby are doing well and have been in regular contact with the team.
“That’s what eases my mind is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn added. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits, and he’ll walk away from this just fine.”
Boyd’s recovery continues
Boyd has been on injured reserve since August with a shoulder problem and had not featured this season. The shooting shifted attention away from football entirely as medical staff worked to stabilise him.
Reports from ABC 7 NY confirmed he required several surgeries to treat the bullet lodged in his right lung.
His progress has encouraged teammates and coaches, who saw his Instagram message as a sign that he has started to move beyond the most dangerous stage of his recovery.
Boyd’s post showed him propped up in a hospital bed, smiling. It was his first direct message since the shooting and matched the tone Glenn described when speaking about the family.
Difficult week for the Jets
The franchise has spent the past few days checking on Boyd, supporting his family and working with authorities as the investigation continues. Police have released images of a man they want to speak to but have not made any arrests.
For now, Boyd remains in hospital but is trending in a positive direction. The near-tragedy, paired with the news of his newborn, has left the organisation focused on his wellbeing more than anything else.
As Glenn put it, the priority is simple.
“I just want to make sure he’s okay,” he said. “That is all that matters right now.”
