Donald Trump has shocked Taylor Swift fans with his response to news of her engagement to Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.
Trump has made no secret of his dislike for Taylor Swift. He has repeatedly blasted her online, in trademark full caps, and once posted simply, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” during the 2024 election. That history makes his latest response all the more surprising.
Swift and Travis Kelce announced their engagement this week in an Instagram post. Within hours, reporters pressed Trump for comment during a livestreamed Cabinet meeting.
His answer was not what many expected. “Well, I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump said. “I think he’s a great player and a great guy, and I think she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck.”
That warm reaction followed more than a year of public hostility. When Swift endorsed Kamala Harris in 2024, Trump snapped back online with the infamous all-caps post. His daughter Ivanka and granddaughter Arabella still attended her tour, but the feud continued.
In May, he escalated the attacks with a new insult. “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’”
Earlier this month, he shifted his focus to actress Sydney Sweeney. “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there,” Trump wrote. “Go get ’em Sydney!”
He then circled back to Swift, linking her to what he calls “woke” culture. “Just look at Woke singer Taylor Swift,” he wrote. “She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT.”
The jabs formed part of a wider campaign against “woke” companies. Donald Trump had also lashed out at Bud Light and Jaguar, yet Taylor Swift remained his main target.
“Ever since I alerted the world as to what she was by saying on TRUTH that I can’t stand her (HATE!),” he added, “She was booed out of the Super Bowl and became, NO LONGER HOT.”
That background only sharpened the surprise when he addressed Swift and Kelce’s engagement. After months of derision, Trump momentarily set politics aside and offered congratulations.
His warm words came despite months of posts attacking Swift’s politics, music, and even her appearance.
