There has been a key update in the Denzel Perryman charges case, with the Los Angeles County District Attorney deciding not to prosecute the Chargers linebacker over his recent weapons arrest.
The decision follows Perryman’s arrest on August 1 in South Los Angeles. Police stopped him for a vehicle code violation and discovered five firearms in his car.
Among them were two AR-style rifles that did not comply with California regulations. The other three, all handguns, were properly registered.
Officers took Perryman into custody without incident. He spent the weekend behind bars before being released on Monday.
Denzel Perryman charges dropped
The D.A.’s office confirmed it had reviewed the case and sent it back to law enforcement for further investigation. That effectively paused any criminal prosecution for now.
Perryman’s agent welcomed the development, saying: “The charges have been dismissed. At this time, there’s no additional comment, but we’re grateful for everyone’s patience throughout the process.”
This marks the first felony arrest in Perryman’s 11-year NFL career. He received a three-game suspension in 2023 for repeated safety violations, but has avoided serious off-field controversy until now.
He returned to the Chargers this offseason on a one-year deal worth just over $2.5million.
It’s a homecoming of sorts, as the Chargers drafted Perryman in the second round back in 2015, launching his NFL career in Los Angeles.
Known for his aggressive tackling and locker-room presence, Perryman has built a strong resume with over 600 career tackles and a Pro Bowl appearance in 2021. Last season, he finished with 55 tackles and an interception for the Texans before rejoining the Chargers.
The NFL has not commented on the arrest. However, the league generally waits for legal matters to conclude before assessing possible discipline. The Chargers have also stayed quiet on the matter.
Meanwhile, the team is preparing for its first preseason matchup against the Cowboys on August 10. With head coach Jim Harbaugh in his second season, expectations are growing as Los Angeles looks to start the 2025 campaign on a positive note.
The Chargers kicked off preseason with a dominant 34-7 win over the Lions, and coaches plan to use Perryman in the defensive rotation this season.
