Bill Belichick has long been known for his meticulous football preparation that helped the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl wins.
But this season, the legendary NFL coach is adding an unexpected extra to his resume – yoga.
The 73-year-old is now in his first-ever collegiate role as the head coach of the University of North Carolina.
And the new leader has included yoga into the Tar Heels’ training plan as a key recovery tool in the run-up to the 2025 season.
The initiative comes months after Belichick went viral with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, when photos surfaced of the pair performing yoga poses on a beach.
Hudson, who’s 24 years old and 49 years old younger than her boyfriend, shared images where the iconic American coach is holding her in the air in a balancing yoga pose.

At the time, Belichick joked that he was trying to stay young, but now the beach yoga sessions seem to be the birth of something more, influencing his coaching methods.
Bill Belichick: “Yoga is a recovery technique.”
When speaking in a press conference for UNC, Belichick explained his new training methods: “Yoga is a recovery technique. It’s not really a training technique.
“We use it more for recovery, and there are a lot of benefits to it.
“It’s a good way after three or four days of practice to give the body a chance to recover, stretch, get the blood flowing and so forth.”
The coach who built an NFL dynasty over multiple decades with star quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots is approaching his first college season with the same attention to detail as his NFL past.
At their famous Chapel Hill, he has implemented a comprehensive recovery program that blends his traditional methods with his newfound appreciation of yoga.
A new era in North Carolina
Alongside the new stretching sessions, Tar Heels collegiate stars also take advantage of nutrition planning, hydration strategies, massages and dynamic stretching routines.
Belickich explained: “Some guys use some more than others depending on what they’re trying to accomplish.
“It’s not just one thing – yoga is a part of the overall program here.”
It’s a part of the growing emphasis on rest, recovery and managing workloads to prevent injury, which is valued as highly as strength and conditioning.
Yoga is a method that’s gained popularity but is rarely featured in professional football.
It’s impact on improving flexibility, balance and mental focus – all areas that can benefit players grinding through long, enduring seasons.
Belichick’s coaching methods have often been unorthodox in finding any edge over their opponents.
And his embrace of yoga signals that even in his 70s, he’s willing to adapt and innovate.
When do the UNC Tar Heels start their 2025 campaign?
The University of North Carolina begin their season against Texas Christian University on September 1, where Belichick will get his first taste of college football as a head coach in his 50-year career.
