Amon-Ra St. Brown says he never intended to make a political statement when he broke out the Trump Dance during the Lions’ win over the Washington Commanders.
Speaking on his “St. Brown” podcast, the receiver explained the celebration was never about the President’s visit. He said it was simply a bit of fun after scoring.
Amon-Ra St. Brown criticised for Trump dance
“If any President was at that game, if they had a dance, I would have done it,” St. Brown said. “It had nothing to do with who the President was.”
He added that it was “just a quick shimmy” and insisted he wasn’t trying to offend anyone. The Lions star also made clear he wasn’t thinking about the cameras or the reaction in the moment.
St. Brown was one of Detroit’s most reliable options again in Washington, adding another strong performance to what has already been a standout season.
The Lions have leaned on him all season, and he has already pushed past 600 receiving yards in 2025
Nick Bosa and Brock Bowers have tried it on the field, and the Detroit Tigers even copied it while Trump watched them play the Yankees in September.
Trump became the first President to attend a regular-season NFL game since Jimmy Carter in 1978, with parts of the crowd loudly booing as he took his seat.
Trump on Commanders’ stadium
ESPN reported that the President wants the Commanders’ next stadium named after him, with “Trump Stadium” floated as his preferred title.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called it “a beautiful name” and said Trump played a role in helping the project move forward.
The Commanders plan to redevelop the old RFK Memorial site, with construction expected to begin once demolition is complete.
Trump has long voiced opinions about the franchise. Earlier this year, Trump said the team should return to its old Redskins name, arguing it “doesn’t have the same ring” since the 2020 rebrand.
