THE INCREDIBLE SHEM ROCK BACKSTORY AFTER MAKING UFC DEBUT

Shem Rock entered UFC Fight Night in Qatar with one of the most extraordinary backstories in MMA. Less than 24 hours later, he left with a unanimous-decision loss and a wave of fan criticism.

Rock, 32, fled the UK in 2014 after being accused of burglary with violence and assault. He was 20, scared, and convinced he would be jailed for a crime he did not commit.

Rock fled England

“I knew the rigmarole of being arrested, but not the rigmarole of going to jail as a young lad,” Rock told BBC Sport. “I thought, ‘I’m not going to jail for a crime I haven’t committed,’ so I fled.”

Rock packed a bag, left England at dawn and made it through France without issue. “I got off the Eurostar train in France like, ‘wow.’ Then I knew they were not going to stop me.”

He travelled to Thailand for several months before settling in Malaysia. That was where everything changed.

Rock wandered into a Brazilian jiu-jitsu class and found a discipline that pulled him away from the life he had been living.

“I caught the bug immediately,” he said. “I was a bit reckless, off the rails. My professor instilled discipline in me on and off the mats. I really applied myself, changed my life, and lived on the straight and narrow.”

Rock stayed overseas for seven years before being arrested on his return to the UK in 2021. He spent six months on remand before being found not guilty in 2022.

With his name cleared, he rebuilt his career and earned a UFC contract earlier this year.

Rock suffers loss on UFC debut

Rock struggled with Nurullo Aliev’s pace and pressure from the opening bell and was outworked in every round.

He found brief momentum late in the third, securing mount during a scramble, but failed to produce a finish. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 for Aliev.

Rock also drew criticism for leaving the cage before the official verdict was read.

Fans were quick to react, with some calling for him to be cut after a single appearance and others saying he had been “fraud checked.”

One comment read, “No need to waste time with this Shem Rock guy! CUT HIM!”

Paddy Pimblett cornered his teammate and close friend on the night, having helped promote the debut throughout fight week.
