Social media star Paige Spiranac revealed she was once involved in a ‘cheating’ ordeal – one which did not go down well with her mother.
The 32-year-old opened up on the incident during a 2022 episode of her podcast, Playing-A-Round.
It all started when Spiranac was discussing Patrick Reed’s controversial moment at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open.
The American was accused of improperly declaring his ball ’embedded’ in the rough in order to get a free drop. In the end, he was cleared of any wrongdoing.
Nevertheless, the story brought back golfing memories for Spiranac, who opened up on her own experience of bending the rules.
She said: “I cheated myself once, and I learned my lesson the very hard way.
“It was one of my very first tournaments, I ended up hitting a ball in the water but I was on a very steep slope. I just ended up dropping another ball and saying I found it.
“I played it off and my mom, who packed my golf bag the night before, said ‘hey you started the round with six balls how do you only have five?’
“She is one of the sweetest ladies ever but she is scary, you do not want to disappoint her.
“She just gave me this look and she said ‘if you ever do that again, if I ever catch you cheating, you will never play golf ever again.’
“I was like ‘OK’ and I learned my lesson.”
Spiranac’s brief golf career
Spiranac started out as an exciting young prospect on the amatuer circuit.
The golfer went on to compete in a number of Ladies European Tour events before going over to the United States and winning the Cactus Tour in Arizona.
Spiranac was good, but not good enough to qualify for the lucrative LPGA Tour. It was at that point when she decided to step away from the sport, and build her online business instead.
The American now works as a model, a tutorial producer, podcast and a social media personality.
She currently has four million followers on Instagram, with the numbers growing with every post.
