Mick Foley has announced he is stepping away from WWE, saying the company’s close relationship with President Donald Trump has become impossible for him to ignore.
The WWE Hall of Famer confirmed on Tuesday that he has informed talent relations he will no longer make appearances for the company while Trump remains in office. Foley also said he will not renew his WWE Legends deal when it expires in June.
The decision follows Trump’s comments on the death of filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner, which Foley described as the “final straw.”
Mick Foley to quit WWE
Foley shared his decision in a statement posted to Instagram, where he outlined concerns that had been building for months.
“While I have been concerned about WWE‘s close relationship with Donald Trump for several months — especially in light of his administration’s ongoing cruel and inhumane treatment of immigrants (and pretty much anyone who ‘looks like an immigrant’) — reading the President’s incredibly cruel comments in the wake of Rob Reiner’s death is the final straw for me,” Foley wrote.
He added: “I no longer wish to represent a company that coddles a man so seemingly void of compassion as he marches our country towards autocracy.
“Last night, I informed WWE talent relations that I would not be making any appearances for the company as long as this man remains in office.”
Foley also confirmed he will allow his existing Legends contract to expire.
“I love WWE, will always treasure my time with them, and I am deeply appreciative for all the opportunities they afforded me,” Foley wrote. “But, in the words of Popeye the sailor, ‘I stands all I can stands, and I can’t stands no more.’”
Trump comments in question
Foley’s decision centers on comments Trump made following the deaths of Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner.
Authorities found the couple dead on Sunday, and later charged their son in connection with the case.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote:
“A very sad thing happened last night in Hollywood. Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, sometimes referred to as TDS.
He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before.
May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
WWE and Trump ties
Trump has maintained a long-standing relationship with WWE. He appeared at major wrestling events during the early 2000s and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, the same year as Foley.
Linda McMahon, former WWE CEO and wife of Vince McMahon, currently serves as Trump’s Secretary of Education.
Her son-in-law, WWE Chief Creative Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque, has appeared at the White House alongside Trump.
WWE has not issued a public response to Foley’s statement.
