Gregg Popovich remains a much-loved figure in San Antonio and around the NBA, and fans made that clear during a rare public appearance on Friday night.
The longtime Spurs coach received a standing ovation after making a rare public appearance at a G League game, marking one of his few outings since stepping away from coaching following serious health issues.
Popovich attended the Austin Spurs game on Friday and walked across the court as the crowd rose to applaud. Video from the arena showed him using a cane and receiving assistance from two people as he crossed the floor.
Rare outing after stroke
Popovich, 76, stepped down as head coach last year after suffering a stroke. He later transitioned into his current role as president of basketball operations, where he continues to oversee the San Antonio Spurs organisation.
Friday’s appearance marked one of only a handful of times Popovich has been seen publicly since that decision. Fans in attendance responded with loud applause as he waved and acknowledged the crowd.
“ICONIC COACH,” one fan wrote on X.

Health recovery still ongoing
Popovich has largely remained out of the spotlight since his stroke, focusing on recovery while maintaining a behind-the-scenes role with the franchise.
Video from the game showed him moving slowly as he crossed the court, though he stopped to greet fans and pose for photos. He later exited to another round of applause.
The appearance came more than a year after Popovich was hospitalised following the stroke and several months after a separate medical emergency while dining at a restaurant. He officially ended his coaching tenure in May and handed day-to-day responsibilities to his staff.
Spurs legacy remains unmatched
Popovich spent 29 seasons as head coach of the San Antonio Spurs and retired as the winningest coach in NBA history, with 1,422 regular-season victories.
He led the Spurs to five NBA championships and became one of only five coaches to win five or more titles. His influence shaped multiple generations of players and helped define one of the league’s most stable franchises.
Despite stepping away from the bench, Popovich remains involved with the team in a senior leadership role. The Spurs currently sit near the top of the Western Conference, continuing to operate under the culture he helped build.
