FORMER SUPER BOWL CHAMPION DARRON LEE HELD ON FIRST-DEGREE MURDER CHARGE

Darron Lee remains in jail without bond after a Tennessee judge ruled he must stay in custody while facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of his girlfriend.

Prosecutors in Hamilton County also charged the 31-year-old with tampering with or fabricating evidence. Judge Tori Smith denied bond during a hearing this week. Lee is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on March 9.

Authorities identified the victim as Gabriella Perpétuo.

Prosecutors outline allegations

First responders went to a rented home in Ooltewah, a suburb of Chattanooga, on February 5 after receiving a call reporting CPR in progress. Deputies found Perpétuo deceased at the scene.

According to an arrest affidavit, Lee told deputies she may have fallen in the shower. Investigators later stated that the condition of the residence did not match that explanation.

Detective Brian Lockhart testified that he attended the autopsy and learned the potential manner of death is blunt force trauma homicide. An official autopsy report has not yet been released.

The affidavit also describes signs of trauma and blood found in multiple areas of the home. Prosecutors argued in court that the evidence contradicted Lee’s account of events.

Hamilton County District Attorney Coty Wamp told the court that Lee was “in a home with a female that was, for lack of a better term, beaten to death,” and argued against bond. Wamp also confirmed the case qualifies for capital punishment, though prosecutors have not decided whether to seek the death penalty.

Prior probation raised in court

During the hearing, prosecutors noted Lee was on probation in Florida for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery, and on probation in Ohio for attempted batteries.

Lee appeared with a deputy public defender, who argued that courts often set bond in first-degree murder cases and said it remains early in the proceedings.

The court has not scheduled a trial date.

NFL career background

The New York Jets selected Lee with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft after a standout college career at Ohio State.

He later joined the Kansas City Chiefs and was part of the roster that won Super Bowl LIV in February 2020, though he did not play in the game itself.

Lee made his final NFL appearance in November 2020 with the Buffalo Bills.

The criminal case now moves forward in Tennessee courts, where Lee remains in custody pending his March hearing.
