Indiana Fever WNBA star Caitlin Clark has revealed she was fined what a team-mate joked would “break the bank” after a comment about referees landed her in hot water.
Fever star Clark is sidelined for the season with a groin injury. However, she still represents her team, watching from the sidelines as they beat the Atlanta Dream in their first round of the playoffs.
Her and fellow injured team-mate Sophie Cunningham had a great time watching their team win.
However, even though she was not playing, the game was not without controversy for Clark, who wrote “refs couldn’t stop us” on social media afterwards.
She followed up by stating: “got fined $200 for this lol,” before adding: “BENCH MOB WILL BE EVEN MORE ROWDY TOMORROW LETS GOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
The revelation that Clark has been fined was met with a sarcastic joke from Cunningham about how it will impact the star’s funds.
Cunningham said: “That’s really gonna break the bank for her. Starting a GoFundMe now.”
Indeed, Clark is earning $76,000 for the year on her Fever contract, but the majority of her wealth comes from an endorsement deal with Nike, worth $28million.
As such, it’s unlikely that a $200 fine from the WNBA is going to cause her to lose much sleep. The Fever next face the Las Vegas Aces on Tuesday, who they currently lead 1-0 in the series.
Clark has clearly been having fun despite not playing, as she dragged Cunningham past photographers for outfit photos, despite her teammate saying: “She forgets I have a broken leg.”
Clearly not enjoying the spotlight, Cunningham sarcastically said: “Wow, this is so cool,” as photographers snapped photos of her and Clark together.
