Patrick Beverley was placed under arrest in Texas after police received an assault complaint from his sister following an incident at their family home.
Court documents outline her account of the incident. His attorney disputes the details and has urged against rushing to judgment.
What the affidavit alleges
The alleged altercation took place in Fort Bend County after the teenager returned home from visiting her boyfriend.
According to the affidavit, her mother allowed the boyfriend inside, and Beverley confronted his sister for leaving without permission.
She told officers he “grabbed her by her neck with both hands” and “picked her up off the ground”. She claimed the choking lasted “20 to 30 seconds” and left her unable to breathe.
Police say she reported pain in her neck and said she felt she was “losing oxygen”. The affidavit states that Beverley then moved her into another room while still holding her neck.
She alleged he “slammed her body against the walls” as she tried to loosen his grip. Officers say she described being laid on a sofa before Beverley “stood on top of her, and punched her approximately one time on her left eye with a closed fist”.
She also told police he threatened her during the incident. The affidavit says he stated he would “be the family relative to kill her”.
A responding officer said they observed marks on her neck and petechiae in her eyes. Beverley was taken into custody on a charge involving assault that impedes breathing or circulation.
He was released later that day on a $40,000 bond. The investigation is ongoing.
Legal team on Patrick Beverley arrest for assault
Soon after his arrest, Beverley posted on X. “Please don’t believe everything you see on the internet. Hope all is well, Luv,” he wrote.
His legal team pushed back strongly against the claims. Attorney Letitia Quinones-Hollins said the sister’s account does not reflect what happened.
“I understand that the affidavit contains some negative details; however, remember that it is only one side of the story, given at a time when emotions were high,” she said.
“We don’t believe that the description in that affidavit is accurate, nor is it complete.”
She added that Beverley is “not a violent man and was not violent that night”. She said he cooperated fully with the police and encouraged others to do the same.
“He has always looked out for their well-being and will continue to do so,” she said. “I have every expectation that when all the facts are in, Patrick will be cleared of these charges.”
Quinones-Hollins also addressed the family dynamic. “He cares deeply about his little sister, a young lady, a minor,” she said, adding that Beverley was concerned after finding her alone with an older teen.
Patrick Beverley’s NBA career
Beverley last appeared in an NBA game in May 2024 during an altercation-filled loss to the Pacers. He received a four-game suspension for throwing a ball at fans, which he has yet to serve.
He has not officially retired, but most of his recent public activity has centred on his podcast. His feud with Klay Thompson over comments about Megan Thee Stallion drew attention earlier this month.
Court proceedings in Texas will determine the next steps in the case.
