Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has named his three favourite NBA players and discussed his feelings on the Boston Celtics handing Joe Mazzulla a new contract.
Guardiola is one of the most recognisable faces in soccer. The Man City boss has amassed almost 40 trophies in his managerial career, including three Champions Leagues, while he’s also been named the world’s best club coach on three occasions.
While he’s a mastermind in the soccer world, Guardiola also keeps abreast with what’s happening in the NBA.
City played a pre-season friendly in Palermo on Saturday, in which they won 3-0, courtesy of goals from Erling Haaland and Tijjani Reijnders (two) and during a press conference, NBA journalist Marc Stein asked him his thoughts on some basketball news.
Guardiola said “I love it,” when asked about the Boston Celtics handing a new contract to Mazzulla. The pair have developed a friendship, and have similar philosophies, admiring each other’s coaching styles.
After three seasons as Celtics head coach, Mazzulla is reported to have been handed a multi-year extension, with the organisation wanting him there for a long time.
On the NBA as a whole, City boss Guardiola said it has “always been important in my life.”
The soccer manager then named Steph Curry, Luka Doncic and LeBron James as his favourite basketball players in the post-Michael Jordan era.
After City’s successful end to pre-season, they are gearing up for the beginning of the Premier League, when they play Wolves on August 16, looking to have a more positive season than their last.
Indeed, the serial Premier League champions finished third in the league, 13 points adrift from Liverpool, who were crowned champions for the first time since 2019-20.
