Tommy Fury passed on a lucrative opportunity to face Jake Paul again earlier this year, with a new documentary revealing why the fight never happened.
The 25-year-old boxer and reality star had the chance to run back his 2023 victory, but timing proved the sticking point. In the Amazon project “Tommy: The Good. The Bad. The Fury”, cameras caught his father John taking a call from their lawyer during a family camping trip.
The discussion centered around Paul’s team reaching out after their original opponent pulled out. A rematch was on the table for June, but John quickly dismissed the proposal.
“That’s the oldest trick in the book. Isn’t it?” he said, noting his son had just undergone surgery and was still short of sharpness.
Tommy had been inactive for 18 months by that stage, and his dad felt a quick turnaround would be unfair. “We’re a couple of months out from the proposed fight night,” John made it clear his son needed more preparation time.
The boxer himself was tempted by the payday and asked what the numbers might look like, but John assured him it wasn’t the right move.
Tommy agreed, admitting he needed “2–3 fights” to get himself truly ready before stepping in with Paul again.
It marked a contrast to his earlier words, when Fury said he would fight Paul “anytime, anywhere.” Instead, the American YouTuber-turned-fighter went on to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in June, securing a unanimous decision win.
The documentary adds a new layer to the ongoing rivalry, which began when Fury handed Paul the first defeat of his career in February 2023.
Tommy Fury won their Saudi Arabia clash by split decision, even after Jake Paul knocked him down in the eighth round.
That night generated over 800,000 pay-per-view buys and remains one of the most-watched events in crossover boxing.
Since then, both men have traded barbs and teased a rematch, but schedules and circumstances have kept them apart.
Fury remains convinced it will happen again. In a later interview, he said he believes he and Paul will meet in the ring down the line. For now, though, the rematch that could have filled arenas this summer remains an opportunity passed up.
