British journalist and broadcaster Piers Morgan has decided to wave the white flag and backtrack on his controversial Jake Paul claim.
The 60-year-old went after the social media star, saying his boxing fights were ‘boring, staged b******t’. Paul did not take the comments lightly and decided to hire one of the leading American lawyers, Alex Spiro, to go after Morgan.
The Brit took to X on Saturday afternoon to make an official U-turn and clarify his comments.
Morgan said: “What I meant is that his fights have been predominantly against older, past-their-prime opponents, which may be lucrative for both sides, and may have entertainment value, but don’t reveal how he stacks up against currently ranked boxers and therefore are not a good look for the sport.”
He added: “I did not intend to suggest that the outcome was predetermined and certainly didn’t mean to suggest anything illegal.”
Morgan heaps praise on Paul for Anthony Joshua challenge
Paul, who is currently 12-1 as a professional boxer, has recently hit the headlines for daring to challenge former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua.
Morgan, during his high-profile climbdown, gave Paul credit for going after the British heavyweight.
He continued on X: “If reports are correct that Jake is now in negotiations to fight Anthony Joshua, that would obviously be a seriously credible bout against one of the best heavyweights in the world.
“Jake is welcome to come on Uncensored to discuss this, and verbally slug it out with me, anytime.”
Paul’s boxing credibility remains questionable
Paul may have earned a big win over Morgan, but that is unlikely to end questions over his credibility as a pro boxer.
The social media star has forged a unique professional career, with the 28-year-old prioritizing names over quality.
His last two outings underline that notion, with Paul beating a near 60-year-old Mike Tyson and a depleted Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
Calling out Anthony Joshua appears to be more of a media stunt then an actual challenge, considering the vast gulf in size, physicality and boxing experience between the two men.
Paul’s sole professional defeat came all the way back in 2023 against British influencer Tommy Fury. A rematch between the two men seems far more likely than a showdown with AJ.
There are also a number of other fights which the American boxer has been linked with. These include former world champion Carl Froch, UFC star Conor McGregor and British YouTuber KSI.
