Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car crash in Nigeria that killed two people, according to local police.
The former world heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries after the vehicle he was travelling in collided with a stationary truck on Monday morning. Authorities in Ogun State confirmed that two other passengers died at the scene.
Joshua was taken to hospital for treatment following the crash, which occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, close to the junction leading to Sagamu.
Police confirm fatalities and investigation
Ogun State police commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo said the collision happened at around 11am local time and involved a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua.
“It’s still sketchy for us here. We are trying to establish all the facts from the first responders and that is the most we can say,” Ogunlowo said. “We will be giving details as we have updates.”
In a formal statement, the Ogun State Police Command confirmed the fatalities.
“The vehicle conveying Mr Joshua, a Lexus SUV, was involved in the accident under circumstances that are currently being investigated,” the statement read.
“Joshua, seated in the rear of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries and is receiving medical attention with another injured person.
“Tragically, two other passengers in the vehicle lost their lives at the scene. The deceased have been conveyed to Livewell Hospital morgue, Sagamu.”
Police added that a full investigation has begun and extended condolences to the families of those who died.

Road safety agency outlines preliminary findings
Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps said it reached the scene within minutes of being alerted.
“A total of five adult males were involved in the crash,” the agency said. “Two persons sadly lost their lives, one sustained injuries, while two others escaped unhurt. Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and sustained minor injuries.”
The agency stressed that its findings remain preliminary.
“Initial investigations indicate that the Lexus Jeep, suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck,” the statement said.
“The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways.”

Joshua seen leaving scene
Videos shared by local outlets showed Joshua sitting in the rear seat of a heavily damaged vehicle following the crash. Further footage appeared to show him walking slowly before getting into a police vehicle.
Joshua’s UK management team said they had been unable to reach him at the time of reporting.
The 36-year-old has close ties to Nigeria and family connections in Sagamu. He attended boarding school in Ikenne before moving to the UK as a child.
The incident comes just days after Joshua knocked out YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in the sixth round of a Netflix-streamed bout.
